How to Save Offline Maps in the New Google Maps App for iOS

The update to Google Maps on iOS and Android brings an important feature that a lot of users would find useful/interesting. Google Maps now has a specific offline maps feature. It’s built right into the app as a separate feature.

There is an older method of caching maps we wrote about. You no longer need that. The new offline maps feature works far better and is more comprehensive. For those who want to make use of the offline feature, here’s how it works.

To Save a Map for Offline use:

• Open Google Maps (updated, v3.0 for iOS)
• Tap on the profile icon

• If you aren’t logged in (with your Google account), do so.
• Scroll down to the Offline maps section.

• Tap on Save map to use offline
• You will be taken to the maps interface where you can pan and zoom to get to the location you want to save. Then, tap on Save
• Label the offline map and tap Save. Google Maps will save the map.

• Once you save the map, you can access the map from the same place.

To view and manage offline maps:

• Open Google Maps and tap on the profile icon
• Scroll down to the Offline maps section
• Tap on View all and manage

• You can tap on Save a new offline map to start saving another map area
• You can also tap on the menu icon (3 vertical dots) on any saved map to rename, update or delete a saved offline map. Tapping on the saved map shows you the map. The reading under the map shows you the size and the expiry time for the map.

While there are other cool offline maps apps for iPhone you can check out, I think Google Maps’s offline feature is now robust enough. It would be best to save the map in the standard vectorized-image format instead of the satellite imagery for obvious reasons.
