Android updates bring new features and changes that many users enjoy, but unfortunately any update can also bring problems and bugs. In a two-part series we shared our Galaxy S4 Android 4.4.2 Impressions and a full review of the update after two weeks of use. While the update brought some small issues to our test device, overall performance is good.
Typically these update problems strike a small number of users, with no easy to identify reason to know what device will experience Android 4.4.2 problems and which ones won’t. Sometimes specific apps are activities are impacted by an update, which is the case with these problems.
In the weeks following the Android 4.4.2 update release, at least seven major Galaxy S4 Android 4.4.2 problems emerged in comments and forums. For users that are still waiting to update this is a list of potential problems, not a list of problems that every user will face. When possible we share fixes to the Android 4.4.2 problems listed below, but some may need to come with an Android 4.4.3 update or Android 4.5.
Battery Life
Galaxy S4 Android 4.4.2 battery life is good for me, but not for everyone.
With every update battery life emerges as a big complaint from users. Updates can add new features and improve battery life for some, but ultimately there will be a small, and vocal group of users with bad battery life. In the comments on Gotta Be Mobile venkat describes the Galaxy S4 battery life problem that appeared after updating to Android 4.4.2.
“I downloaded last night on my S4.
Morning I unplugged from charger around 6:45 and by 9:45 I have 30% battery life. So in 3 hrs it drained 70%, update is not going to help me. Does any have same issue with battery life after update.
Note: I browsed for 20 minutes on phone and rest all time its idle.”
There is no immediate fix for this. It could be part of a large Android battery life bug that relates to the camera, but users will need to look at the settings to see what apps are using the most battery life. One thing that may help is performing a factory reset, but this will force users to set the device up like new again.
Performance Problems
The Galaxy S4 Android 4.4.2 update brought speeds to a near stop on the Galaxy S4 test unit we use. The video below shows how long it takes to switch apps and to go to the home screen. Sometimes the Galaxy S4 lag even resulted in a single press of the home button reading as a hold that launched the app manager.After a factory reset the Galaxy S4 Android 4.4.2 problem disappeared and we can use the device much easier, with faster speeds and a more fluid experience.
Apps Deleted
When we updated to Android 4.4.2 on the Galaxy S4 we saw some app issues, but not to the degree that a number of users report. According to Buddy and Jason in the Gotta Be Mobile comments, the Galaxy S4 Android 4.4.2 update resulted in missing apps.“Same boat Jason, my phone lost about 10 apps. I had to reinstall Youtube, Flashlight, Google Chrome, just to name a few. My phone freezes with a black screen. I can push all sorts of buttons, but my screen stays black. It seems like a random fluke when it actually opens up.”
This is a very annoying problem, but hopefully users can re-download the apps and the app data will still be available. We had to re-login to all of our apps before we could use them.
Black Lock Screen
A very odd Galaxy S4 Android 4.4.2 problem results in a black lock screen. Users can swipe on this black screen to unlock the S4, but it will not show anything when the screen is awake and the Galaxy S4 is locked. There is an easy way to fix this Galaxy S4 problem according to Hieu in the Gotta Be Mobile comments,“If your phone has problem with black screen. You should turn off personal message. Go to setting-> lock screen ->lock screen widgets -> clock or personal message -> clock.”
Even if you didn’t have personal message turned on to start with this solution should fix the problem.
Email Sync Broken
Other users report trouble syncing email on the Galaxy S4 after the 4.4.2 update. The Galaxy S4 tells users to fix master sync, but isn’t very helpful in actually fixing the problem. Lucas writes,“Since the update I lost some of my apps and now I can’t sync my email account.There is no way to turn the sync function on it says off and master off”
Thankfully reader Erik offers a fix for Galaxy S4 email Sync problems,
“Master Sync update: Go to Settings, Data usage, menu and make sure Auto-sync data is checked”
This may not fix the issue for everyone, but it is a good start.

Broken WiFi
Perhaps one of the most irritating update problems is upgrading and losing connectivity. David shares a friend lost WiFi connectivity after the update.“A friend of mine is experiencing nonresponsive wifi and will be cashing in on warranty to get new phone.”
It’s not clear how widespread this problem is, but hopefully there is a software solution available to others. Often this type of issue requires a reset as a possible fix.
Contact List Not Loading
Another reader, Becky writes that after installing the Galaxy S4 Android 4.4.2 update her contact list is broken. She writes,“Updated just now and my contact list will not load.. Its stuck on the updating contact list.?” Becky
This problem is annoying to say the least, and the best possible solution may be to remove and re-add the account. Or turn off contact sync and turn it back on. Find accounts in the settings, tap on the email account name and then when you see options, turn off contact sync, wait a minute and turn it back on. If that fails you may need to remove the email account completely and re-add it or reset the phone.
